Product Description

There are four kinds of Herb Bombs in the bag: basil, chive, dill, and parsley. Each bomb is approximately 1/2 inch in diameter and stamped with the first letter of the herb it contains. They’re made of red clay, organic compost, and non-GMO seeds.

The Bee Bombs are each approximately 1-inch in diameter and contain different seed mixes; you choose the one that’s appropriate for your region (refer to the map photo in the gallery). Select from:
1. Midwest/Mid-Atlantic/New England
2. Southern
3. Western, low water use

These regions are guidelines, and not all seeds will grow well in all parts of a region. Contact Plantables at plantablesllc@gmail.com with questions or if you have specific seed needs.

Book Recommendation

We asked Jim and Karen, the founders of Plantables, to share a book recommendation. Their choice? Attracting Native Pollinators: The Xerces Society Guide to Conserving North American Bees and Butterflies and Their Habitat by the Xerxes Society and Marla Spivak.

Why this book? Jim explains, “Dr. Spivak is the local bee expert at the University of Minnesota and her Bee Squad has helped a lot of people get started with beekeeping and bee habitat development.”

DIY

While we encourage you to support Plantables, we also hope you’ll get your hands dirty and try making your own seed bombs at home. Below is a recipe from the folks at Plantables. Enjoy!

Herb Bombs
Shared by Jim Schreiber at Plantables

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup dry red clay (handle carefully so as not to create dust)
  • ½ cup organic “screened” compost
  • ¼ cup coconut screened coir
  • 1 teaspoon herb seeds (for example, dill, basil, chive, or parsley)
  • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Combine dry red clay, compost, and coconut coir in a deep bowl.
  2. Mix carefully (slowly and gently so as not to create a lot of dust from the clay) until fully combined. Plantables uses a deep bowl and a KitchenAid mixer on the lowest speed, but you can use a large bowl and a spoon.
  3. Add herb seeds and stir again to equally distribute the seeds.
  4. Add water, and mix again until the mixture has a doughy texture. If necessary, add more water to get the right texture.
  5. Weigh out 0.4-ounce pieces and roll them into balls. If you don’t have a kitchen scale, no problem. Just make balls with an approximate diameter of 0.5 inch. No need to be too precise for home use.
  6. Air dry on a cookie sheet or a tray at room temperature overnight (or for a few days if you live in a humid environment).
  7. Plant your seed bombs right away if it’s planting season, or store them in paper bags until the time comes.
